New Delhi, August 8, 2025 — The President of India has appointed Justice Partha Sarathi Sen and Justice Apurba Sinha Ray as Judges of the Calcutta High Court. The appointments take effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.
The Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice, issued the official notification on Friday, confirming that the two judges—who were serving as Additional Judges—will now hold full-term positions in the High Court.
Judicial Experience and Service
Justice Partha Sarathi Sen and Justice Apurba Sinha Ray have been serving as Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court, contributing to the adjudication of a wide range of cases. Their elevation to permanent judgeships comes as part of the regular process of strengthening the judiciary and filling sanctioned vacancies in High Courts across the country.
Formal Notification
The appointments were made under the powers conferred by Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India, which governs the appointment and conditions of the office of High Court judges. The notification was signed by Jagannath Srinivasan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India, and circulated to the relevant constitutional and administrative offices, including the Governor and Chief Minister of West Bengal, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and the President’s Secretariat.
Institutional Importance
This decision is expected to aid in improving judicial efficiency and reducing case backlogs in one of the country’s oldest and most prominent High Courts. The Calcutta High Court, established in 1862, has jurisdiction over the state of West Bengal and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The appointments reflect the continuing efforts of the judiciary and the government to strengthen the justice delivery system and ensure that courts across India have their full complement of judges.
